What is evidence-based practice?
Evidence-based practice is “the conscientious, explicit and juidicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.” (Dr. David Sackett, 1996).
Why is there need for evidence-based practice?
- To provide effective care in hospital, clinic, community, and home: Research is the cornerstone for healthcare profession as it informs practice, ensures safety and helps monitor effectiveness. Evidence based practice is needed In order to justify the clinical and practice decisions, and to provide the most effective care possible.
- To fulfill roles of healthcare and social practitioners- Healthcare professionals have a professional and moral responsibility to keep up to date with the developments within their development practice.
- Use of up-to-date evidence: When procedures that are not based on recent and updated evidence can, in worst case, can lead to patients receiving the wrong care. It is important that healthcare professionals are aware of what, and where, and how to find new research evidence, and also critically appraise the information they find.
